Jenny Beth Martin asks Dr. Daniel Stock what he was thinking as he watched Anthony Fauci testify at the hearing Senator Rand Paul chaired, and whether he read the diaries. Stock answers from two directions.
The first is clinical. COVID-19, he argues, was never fundamentally a disease of viruses. It was a viral infection, but the illness itself was a disorder of inflammation regulation and immune system regulation, and Fauci is a virologist, trained in neither. Whatever his standing, Stock says his experience should have been enough to recognize that what he was saying publicly was not rational.
The second is the part only a practicing family doctor offers. Stock reads faces and body language every day because that is the job, and neurobiology is a particular interest of his. What he says he saw in that hearing room was a man spending an enormous amount of nervous energy trying to block a reality he did not want to see, a man who had realized he had nowhere left to go. He is careful about his own limits: he cannot get inside another man's head, and he says so plainly. He watched the entire hearing and read many of the diary excerpts.
Along the way he offers the line that reframes the whole credentials argument. When patients ask whether he is an MD, he tells them yes, and then tells them he holds the same credentials Anthony Fauci holds, so they can decide for themselves what the letters are worth.
