Everybody Gets an 80: The Classroom Lesson for Every Student Who Likes Socialism | Oviedo Frasina

Socialism explained in one classroom: a professor averages every grade so everybody gets an 80. Then comes the second test. Oviedo Frasina on Romania.

To redistribute wealth, first you have to have wealth. Oviedo Frasina, born in Bucharest under Nicolae Ceausescu, starts there: Romania had wealth after the Second World War, the Communist Party confiscated private property, and for a while the people who had nothing were excited while the people who had built something watched it go. Then, for the students in school who will think about it, he tells the classroom story. A professor gives a test. Some students score 100, some 80, some fail, and each is happy according to the work they put in. Then the professor announces a socialist grading system: every score is averaged, and everybody gets an 80.

The student who earned 100 now has an 80. The student who failed just passed, and thinks it is pretty cool. On the second test the high achievers decide not to put in the effort and study for an 80, the ones who never studied expect to pass again, and the class average falls to about 70. That, Frasina says, is Romania for twenty years: wealth to distribute, then less, then less, because the ones who do not want to work will not, and the ones who had a reason to work stopped. He ends with the question for anyone who wants to take Jeff Bezos's money so everybody has something: it works for a week or two, and then where do you take from next?

Oviedo Frasina was born in Bucharest, Romania, and grew up under Nicolae Ceausescu; at 20 he was beaten by police for keeping in touch with a girlfriend who had defected to America. From the Surviving Communism panel on The Jenny Beth Show with Jenny Beth Martin.
