The Democratic Socialists of America published a new national program this summer. They call it Workers Deserve More, and it is on their website right now. It imagines a future with no debt, no private health insurance, no mortgages and no landlords, with food, education, energy, medicine, transportation and retirement run as public goods. It also calls for abolishing the Electoral College and the Senate, replacing the President and the Supreme Court with bodies chosen by and subordinate to Congress, and drafting a new constitution for a democratic socialist republic. Jenny Beth Martin reads it, in the authors' own words, to a guest who grew up in a country that promised exactly that.
Lily Tang Williams was a child in Sichuan province during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Food was rationed and her family was poor. Years later, while she was studying law, an American student handed her the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. She became an assistant law professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, decided she could not keep supporting the Chinese Communist Party, and in 1988 she got out.
