For four years Americans were told the border could not be secured without a new law from Congress. Jenny Beth Martin asks Rosemary Jenks of the Immigration Accountability Project, who watches the monthly numbers, what actually changed. Under the Biden administration, illegal crossings ran 10,000 to 12,000 people a day, every day, and virtually everyone apprehended was released into the country. Under President Trump the average is about 250 a day, and only a tiny fraction come in at all.
Jenny Beth then does something she makes a point of doing on air: she corrects her own talking point. Jenks had messaged her that "zero releases" is not literally true, and Jenks explains why. The law still requires the Border Patrol to hand unaccompanied minors to Health and Human Services, and when ICE releases someone it is not counted as a Border Patrol release. Catch and release, the practice of releasing people who turned themselves in with a bus ticket, is over. Jenny Beth adds a number she pulled up during the show: almost 15,000 American cities have fewer people than were released in a single day under Biden.
Then the question that matters for November: how much of this was already law? Jenks' answer is all of it. Remain in Mexico was always allowed; catch and release and the Biden parole programs never were. It is absurd, she says, to claim the border cannot be secured without new legislation, and that is exactly why a law like Rep. Chip Roy's Permanent Trump Secure Border Act is needed: to require the next administration to do what this one did.
Guest: Rosemary Jenks, co-founder and policy director of the Immigration Accountability Project, who testified before the House Judiciary Committee in September on what Congress must do to make the Trump border policies permanent.
