Battle of Ideas: No Defensive Strategy. Reagan Went on Offense and Won | Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev

Battle of ideas: there is no defensive strategy, a Soviet dissident says. Reagan went on offense and won. Compromise with the left loses step by step.

Jenny Beth Martin puts the problem to him: some conservatives are willing to sacrifice just a little. Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, a physicist who joined the Moscow Helsinki Group inside the Soviet Union and was exiled for it, answers that the whole history of the fight, here and everywhere, is an ongoing offensive by the left and an ongoing attempt by conservatives to find a middle ground. Step by step, conservatives give things away. He remembers conversations with people who thought they only had to care about three things, business, religion, and the military, and gave away education and culture without a fight. It was naive, he says, to think the left would not come for business, the military, and religion later, which it did.

This is an ideological war, he says, external and internal, and the two are linked. China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea act as one bloc, and to all of them the enemy number one is the United States. One of the best ways to deal with totalitarianism inside the country is to defeat it outside: when Reagan won the Cold War, the left in America and Western Europe went quiet, lost its idols and its banner, and the stronger the totalitarian forces are abroad, the more comfortable they are at home. Then the one rule: in an ideological war there is no defensive strategy, only offense. Reagan won with a peaceful offensive. Try to contain, defend, and compromise, and you lose, step by step, until you go on offense.

Guest: Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, physicist, Soviet dissident, member of the Moscow Helsinki Group, exiled from the Soviet Union, founder of the Center for Democracy in the USSR.
