Affordability: The Word the Left Planted and Washington Swallowed Whole | Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev

Affordability means to each according to his needs, a Soviet dissident says. That is the communist motto, and even President Trump uses the word now.

How do you fight communism when the people drawn to it think Stalin is ancient history? Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, a physicist who joined the Moscow Helsinki Group inside the Soviet Union and was exiled for it, tells Jenny Beth Martin that talking only about the horrors of Soviet and Chinese communism no longer works. To a young American it is ancient history in a faraway country, and the neo-Marxists answer that it simply was not done right. You have to start with the appeal, he says: explain why the appeal itself is flawed, then show that every attempt to implement it ends in the same total control.

Then he gives an example of how conservatives lose that fight without noticing. Take the word affordability. It came from the left, he says, and not by accident. Spell it out and it means to each according to his needs, the communist motto. The capitalist motto is to each according to his means: if you earned enough, you can afford it, and if you did not, you cannot. Everybody picked the word up, including President Trump, and almost no conservative stopped to discern what it carries. Jenny Beth Martin draws the lesson he has been making all hour: pick up their language and you are on defense, in a fight that has no defensive strategy. He closes with the rule the Soviet Union taught him: who controls the language controls everything. They feed it to us, and we swallow it.

Guest: Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, physicist, Soviet dissident, member of the Moscow Helsinki Group, exiled from the Soviet Union, founder of the Center for Democracy in the USSR.
