What to Text Your Dad: The Get-Out-the-Vote Ask That Fits a Normal Conversation | Jenny Beth Martin

What to text your dad before Election Day: Jenny Beth Martin reads out her actual messages, from "you're voting, right?" to the thank-you.

Most people who download a get-out-the-vote app stall at the same place: the blank message box. What do I say? In this clip from her solo training hour, Jenny Beth Martin answers it the simplest way possible. Talk the way you normally do. A text to your dad will not sound like a text to your college roommate, and it should not.

Then she shows you hers. To her dad in Georgia: "Hey, Dad, you're voting in this election, right?" He says of course, and she asks the only question that matters, by mail, early, or in person on Election Day. That is the plan-to-vote ask, the one a study of 287,000 voters found raises turnout about 4 points, tucked inside a normal conversation instead of read off a script. If he is voting early, she sends the Secretary of State link. A few days later, "Did you vote yet?" If Friday comes and he has not, she keeps going until his name drops off the list, and then she thanks him.

For a college friend worried about the rise of socialism, the ask starts from the conversation they were already having, then lands on the same question: early, or Election Day? She explains why she still pushes for early, because a sick kid or a traffic jam cannot undo a ballot already cast.

And when a friend says they are voting for the other side? Thank them. Share a little if they are open to it, do not argue, and never burn a relationship over one ballot. Being gracious today keeps the door open tomorrow.

Friends Help Friends Vote is a program of Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund. Download the Numinar app, join the Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund Nationwide workspace, and tap Help Your Friends Vote. Everything you need is at friendshelpfriendsvote.com. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.

Jenny Beth Martin is co-founder of the Tea Party movement and Chairman of Tea Party Patriots Action.
