Here is the sentence: the Federal Bureau of Investigation put Senator Chuck Grassley and Congressman Jim Jordan on a list of people spreading Russian disinformation. On that very same list, it wrote down Joe Biden and his family as the victims. The people asking the hard questions were tagged as the threat. The family under investigation was written down as the innocents.
The White House Government Transparency Task Force, run by the journalist John Solomon, declassified the operation. The Bureau called it Round River. At least fourteen confidential sources had brought the Bureau information about the Biden family. Instead of chasing that information, the Foreign Influence Task Force went to work labeling the people raising it as Russian mouthpieces. Bureau Director Kash Patel says he shut that task force down and is examining whether it was used to bury real investigations.
Hold that thought, because the same day the woman who ran the Southern Poverty Law Center's intelligence project was charged with wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering over payments to informants inside the groups she was supposedly tracking. She is charged, not convicted.
Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, connects the two. He argues America's most trusted institutions have been exposed as corrupted, that the Southern Poverty Law Center built its credibility taking on the Klan and then spent it labeling ordinary conservative and Christian groups, and that the labels did not stop at reputation. He points to the shooting at the Family Research Council. And he says the money went offshore, to the Cayman Islands.
Tea Party Patriots Action lived a version of this during the Internal Revenue Service targeting scandal. One arm government, one arm a nonprofit, both sorting Americans into the protected and the targeted.
