Jim Gilmore was Governor of Virginia when the legislature sent him a bill putting cameras on red lights. He vetoed it, and he wrote in his veto message that he did not want young Virginians growing up believing they were being watched all the time. The legislature passed it over his veto. He calls it small potatoes at the time, and then he points at where we are now: flock cameras reading every plate on every street, with artificial intelligence being attached to them. If he were governor today, he says, he would file a bill to ban and abolish community camera surveillance outright.
Gilmore was also governor on September 11, 2001, and he tells Jenny Beth Martin that the day was a watershed that turned America into a security society. His argument is not that the Transportation Security Administration should go away. It is that Americans made a trade without ever debating it, and that you cannot be completely secure and be free at the same time.
