Noncitizen Voting: 28 Green Card Holders Charged, 20,000 Flagged in California | Jenny Beth Martin

Noncitizen voting in California this week: 28 green card holders charged, 11 arrested, 20,000 flagged. Jenny Beth Martin explains what it means.

On Monday the Justice Department charged 28 green card holders in California with federal election crimes and arrested 11 of them. Here is how it got there. On October 13, federal officials checked California's voter rolls against federal citizenship records and found about 20,000 people they believe are noncitizens registered to vote, with ballots already mailed. California would not review the list, so the Justice Department went to court. Every one of the 28 people charged is on that list.

California says the federal government has not shown its work, and Jenny Beth Martin agrees that a list of 20,000 names has to be checked one name at a time. That is exactly the point: citizenship should be checked when a person registers, before Election Day and before a ballot is ever mailed, which is what the SAVE America Act would do.

On 60 Minutes this week the number of people charged with voting illegally was called tiny. Since 2018, Ballotpedia has counted 660 races in this country decided by 10 votes or fewer, 394 decided by 5 or fewer, and 94 decided by a single vote. Whether the number of noncitizens voting is small or large, it can change the outcome of a close election, from the Senate to the school board. As the Justice Department put it, every illegal vote cancels out the vote of a lawful American citizen.
