Constitutional scholar Bill Norton gives Jenny Beth Martin the context that usually gets left out. He explains why Jefferson could not simply free the people he had inherited under Virginia law and feudal-era estate rules, how Jefferson and George Washington operated within a system they did not create, and why none of it makes slavery anything less than abhorrent. Norton closes with the fact that as president, Jefferson signed the ban on importing slaves on the very first day the Constitution allowed it.
