The rallies against Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been presented to the country as spontaneous student activism. Ashley Hayek's daughter came home from a private school with a flyer for one. Her team scraped the graphic and traced it to two Washington DC public school teachers. In Los Angeles, the protest outside White Memorial Hospital was led by a Los Angeles Unified School District teacher. In San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin, the high school walkouts followed the same pattern. And the organizers were not only teachers: they co chair Democratic Socialists of America chapters, and they sit on the board of the American Federation of Teachers.
Ashley Hayek is the president of America First Works, the political arm of the America First Policy Institute. She was executive director of Women for Trump and later national coalitions director across more than 45 coalitions, was a day one team member of the America First Policy Institute, and founded America First Works with Brooke Rollins in late 2021. She is a mother of five.
