Jenny Beth Martin tells the inside story of how the SAVE America Act was written, starting from a January 2024 meeting where she joined Senator Mike Lee and election integrity attorney Cleta Mitchell on a conference call about the legislative landscape. When Cleta described Arizona's bifurcated ballot system, where over 40,000 voters who have not shown proof of citizenship can still vote in federal races, Jenny Beth texted Senator Lee directly: this needs a federal fix.
That text became the SAVE America Act, championed in the House by Senator Mike Lee, Congressman Chip Roy, Congressman Bryan Steil of Wisconsin, and Speaker Mike Johnson. The bill passed the House of Representatives in 2024 under President Biden and stalled in the Senate. It passed again in 2025 and went to the Senate where, in Jenny Beth's words, it fell like a lead balloon.
In January of this year, President Trump asked the bill be renamed the SAVE America Act and that voter ID, mail-in ballot reforms, protections for girls' sports, and protections for children against transgender surgical procedures be added to the package. The bill is now back in front of the Senate, and the holdouts are on notice.
