In January 2021, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock won the Georgia Senate runoffs by 1.2 and 2.1 points, and those two races handed Democrats control of the Senate. In this clip, Jenny Beth Martin walks through the Politico account of how it happened: the Ossoff campaign hired about 2,800 Georgians to reach their own friends and family, and by the campaign's estimate that effort raised turnout nearly 4 points among the 160,000 voters it targeted. The method has a name, relational organizing, and a simple premise: a messenger you know beats a stranger every time. Your dad reads your text message; he hangs up on a robocall.
Jenny Beth also explains the research behind it. In a 2008 experiment with 287,000 voters, a generic "please vote" reminder had no measurable effect, but asking people to make a concrete plan raised turnout about four points. Three questions do it: What time will you vote? How will you get there? What is your backup plan? Then the follow-up matches the plan, whether that is by mail, early in person, or on Election Day, and the name rolls off the list once the ballot is in.
Ossoff is on the ballot again in Georgia this year. This time the playbook belongs to us. Friends Help Friends Vote is the relational organizing program of Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund, and the app puts the whole system in your hand.
