The literature of the Democratic Socialists of America reads beautifully: no house to worry about, no health care bills. Jenny Beth Martin reads that promise to Manuela Callini, born in communist Romania in 1986, and gets the sentence that names the trade. You do not owe anybody anything and you do not own anything, and then you are owned by the state.
Then she explains how free housing worked. The house she grew up in was about 250 years old, taken from its owners without compensation. The state decided who would live there and for how long; when her father wanted a family, he asked the government's permission for a bigger place. After communism fell, her parents bought it. Then the rightful owners appeared, a lawsuit followed, and the state paid them something. That is what the promise comes to: you work your whole life and end up on the street or a tenant in your own home. And it never happens all at once: gradual, dressed up as good ideas for your own good, when in reality it is the opposite.
