Manuela Callini was born in communist Romania in 1986, where neighbors informed on neighbors and her mother would not let her wear a sweater in summer because someone might report it. Jenny Beth Martin has just heard how the dictator who built that system was ended by it: the system eats its own, and dictators have to exert massive control or people will not do what they are told. Callini's answer: it always comes dressed up as good intentions, for your safety. Her example is on American street corners right now: Flock and Axon cameras, sold as a way to solve crimes, which she says really build a pattern of life for everyone who drives past them.
Jenny Beth Martin tells of a friend in law enforcement, a man she trusts, who said the cameras simply catch criminals. Her standard for every viewer: no technology should make me have to trust you individually, because the question is never the officer in front of you but whoever comes after, and the rights in the Constitution do not depend on who holds the badge. Callini adds the other test: trafficking has not changed since the cameras went up. They only watched everyone.
