The Rules Committee fight got heated, and the Democratic Socialists of America answered on social media by calling it symbolic, citing personal attacks and dog whistles, and complaining about an obsession with a streamer. What they did not do is say a single plank of their own platform is wrong.
So Robert McNeily reads it. Published in July, it calls for abolishing the United States Senate, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, abolishing the police and the prison system, and replacing the Supreme Court with a judiciary chosen by Congress. Jeff Reynolds of Restoration News explains the tension underneath it: the organization's own people do not think any of it is strange, and the vice chair went on Fox News and said it sounded normal, but the moment they face an electorate they have to couch it in language everyone already agrees with.
Then Reynolds points at the line that gives it away. "Finishing reconstruction" is reparations. That, he argues, is where the veil slips and you can see the Hegelian dialectic driving the whole program: oppressed against oppressor, where nobody built anything and every dollar someone has was taken from someone else.
