This is the four minutes that set up the whole hour. On Monday the House of Representatives voted 220 to 192 to condemn socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America, and to call for the enactment of the SAVE America Act — the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which requires a person to prove citizenship before registering to vote. The resolution came from Congressman Jeff Crank of Colorado. It reaffirms support for free, fair and secure elections, states that American elections are for American citizens only, and recommits the House to the Constitution. 192 Democrats voted no. Two voted present.
Within about a day, a caucus inside the Democratic Socialists of America answered a vote of the United States Congress with a post urging people to join, and a sign-up link. Almost 3,000 people liked it. The organization's Portland chapter answered by quoting the Communist Manifesto. A movement magazine reported that the New York City chapter has gone from about 5,900 members to more than 15,000.
Then the House voted on a joint resolution proposing a constitutional amendment from Congressman Andy Biggs of Arizona. One sentence: the Supreme Court has nine justices. It failed 212 to 206. Every Republican voted yes. 205 Democrats voted no, and so did the House's one independent.
Jenny Beth Martin lays out why that matters. Congress set the number of justices and Congress has moved it before. It has held at nine since 1869 because both parties have shown restraint, not because the Constitution requires it. Congressman Jim Clyburn wants 13 and calls it a baker's dozen. Kamala Harris has said the country needs to revisit expanding the Court to 13. So think about every ruling you care about, on speech or on elections, if the party that loses a case can simply add four judges. Where is the limiting principle? If nine is not enough, why is 13, and why not 21, or 53?
Tea Party Patriots Action has supported limiting the Supreme Court to nine justices for years. The Court does not always rule the way we want. We respect it anyway, and we do not try to tear down constitutional government when we do not get our way.
