X published findings from its safety team on roughly 200,000 inauthentic Chinese linked accounts. About 200 of them are posting about American data centers, pushing the argument that the centers drive up your electric bill and strain the grid. Senator Ted Cruz spent most of an episode on it, and his warning was aimed at conservatives, who he says are repeating the material without knowing how much manipulation they are being subjected to.
Jeff Reynolds, Senior Editor of Restoration News, has written on the myths and takes them one at a time. The new data centers generate their own power behind the meter, off the grid, with dedicated plants. Their cooling systems run on recirculating water that is drawn once and held for years, not drained from a local water table. Reynolds starts by conceding the legitimate concerns, then explains why the loudest version of the argument does not describe the facilities actually being built, and why the people amplifying it do not have America's interests in mind.
He also does not sign off on every siting decision. There is a real debate to have about where these go, what land and water they use, and how much of our economy should run on the technology. His point is that we cannot have that debate honestly while a foreign influence operation is setting its terms.
