Senator Lisa Murkowski calls the SAVE America Act's proof-of-citizenship requirement impossible for Alaska. In this segment, Jenny Beth Martin reveals the fact that undoes the whole argument: Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend, which more than eight in ten Alaskans apply for every year, already requires an original birth certificate, passport, or naturalization certificate — shown once, in person or by mail, with the documents returned in a stamped self-addressed envelope. The system the senator calls impossible already exists and reaches every village she is worried about.
Then the problem: because Alaska registers voters through the annual dividend application, its own election website warns that a voter identification card does not mean you are a United States citizen, and asks noncitizens who got registered to call and cancel themselves. That is the exact problem the SAVE America Act solves, sitting in the senator's own backyard.
