What does it mean not to surrender to China? Sasha Gong tells Jenny Beth Martin that America has been surrendering for decades, one industry at a time. Now someone wants America to surrender its AI and its data centers too, while China builds its own as fast as it can.
Not surrendering, right now, means not giving up American AI development and building the industrial base back. Gong calls that a fight as important as a world war, and she believes President Trump is the first president to say America needs to be a producer again.
Why does the AI infrastructure have to be here? Because this is the new industrial revolution, and whoever controls it controls not only the military but everyday life. In the 1980s America decided it was fine for Japan, and then China, to make its cheap goods. Look what happened: we cannot live without them. AI is already something you cannot live without. Gong plans her trips and books her hotels with it. Her rule: something you have to live with, you better own.
Then the piece most people missed. China has built a world AI organization in Shanghai, and 26 countries joined, an attempt at a World Trade Organization for AI. Jenny Beth Martin remembers, from her years programming computers, how China tried to get into the standards for modems and data transmission, and why American companies fought to keep American values in them. Standards that govern technology should protect privacy, speech and life the way America does. On AI, America cannot just be at the table. It has to lead the table, and build its own, not the one China started.
