Catherine Whiteford runs the Young Republican National Federation with Hayden Padgett, and her argument is that young Americans are not suddenly reading Karl Marx and deciding they want socialism. They are being sold something else. The candidates winning these primaries are pinpointing affordability, gas prices, housing, and the specific pressure on people in the 18 to 40 range. She and her husband are looking for their first house right now, so this is not theory to her.
Her answer is that the right has to talk about what it is already doing on the same problem. Restricting large institutional investors from buying up additional single family homes. No tax on tips. No tax on overtime. And she says the reason the Democratic Socialists of America candidates land with people her age is not the ideology. It is that they seem relatable and authentic, and the response to that is people on the right who are genuinely themselves, like Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna and Congressman Brandon Gill.
Then the temperature changes. Justine Brooke Murray points out that these candidates are loud and proud now because it is no longer controversial to say it. What has become controversial is being an old school liberal. And when Robert McNeily brings up the Portland chapter answering Congress with the Communist Manifesto, Whiteford's answer is personal. Her grandparents and her mother fled communist China when her mother was 16. They lived under the Mao regime, under real communism, with meat rationing that gave a family of four a fistful of meat to live on for a month.
She thinks Americans are going to start romanticizing figures like Mao, and that some already are. She has a phrase for it. And she is watching the same ideas arrive here in what she calls more palatable packaging.
