The Democratic Socialists of America made a point of announcing it. She is a member in good standing. And at the same moment there is an open fight inside the organization over how much political sway she should have in it at all.
Jenny Beth Martin asks Dwayne Moore, who is from her home state, what he thinks is actually going on. Is she positioning for a presidential run? Is she one of the new leaders of the Democratic Party? Or is she trying to put distance between herself and the things she used to say, at the exact moment the socialists are shouting them from the rooftop?
Moore's answer is that she is a politician without any authentic ideas of her own. She needs the group that propped her up, and she also knows that what they believe is a general-election loser, because most people want to own their homes and do not think 70 percent of a successful person's income belongs to the government. When you have integrity, he says, you stand on your morals whether people like it or not. She cannot do that, because she does not actually believe the things she says.
His read is that the organization is ready to set her aside, not because she is too extreme but because she is not extreme enough for them. He points back to the duel with Nancy Pelosi, where she learned she was not the kingmaker and they learned she could be a pawn.
Jenny Beth Martin's addition is the simplest version of it. When you know where someone stands, you know where they stand. When they waffle, nobody on either side ends up trusting them. And Moore closes on the contrast: this is why people respect Bernie Sanders. He believes his own crazy ideas, and he stands ten toes down on them.
