Catherine Whiteford is National Co-Chairwoman of the Young Republican National Federation, and this is the part of the hour where the argument stops being about ideology and starts being about arithmetic. She walks through the fall deployment schedule with real dates on it, hitting Texas, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia, with a set of smaller regional deployments underneath the national ones.
Some of these are Senate races. Hers is North Carolina, where she says she would like to keep two Republican senators and not send former Governor Roy Cooper to Washington as another vote for the leadership. Michigan is the other one she is watching. And she makes the point that these things are decided at margins most people do not believe until they see one: she has organized a deployment for a special election for Congress that came down to 4,000 votes.
Then Robert McNeily puts the number on the table. In a single New York City primary, the socialists fielded about 8,500 volunteers and knocked more than 750,000 doors by their own count. Whiteford's answer is practical rather than defensive. Apartments knock faster than rural districts where you drive between houses. The Young Republicans typically field 100 to 200 people at a national deployment, and they recently knocked 12,000 doors in a single weekend with volunteers who were not paid a dollar, unlike the operation on the other side.
